The idea for building these unique fly tables came to me after looking around at what was offered by large box stores. Plywood, white oak, or soft pine was all I could find. Absolutely no personality or creativity with any of them. I'm pretty certain you are a lot like me in the fact that we desire high quality, functional products that are both pleasing to use and to look at. Items we can be proud to say we own. Something different than anyone else. Unique. Just like us!
So, I went to my garage, popped open a cold beer, did some sketching, bought a couple more tools (always), and proceeded to make myself a portable/ laptop fly tying table. I knew immediately that I had a winner! Beautiful hardwoods, purposely using distinctive colors and grains, eye catching and seriously one of a kind. I used that table for a number of years, always making mental notes about improvements that might be possible. Jump forward a few years!
RETIREMENT IS IN THE NEAR FUTURE!
I will retire in a few short years as a high school Special Education teacher. I'm gonna need something to do with my time. A small business? Wood, fly tying, fly fishing, good beer, better liquor, be my own boss, maybe make a little money, hang out with Clara!
Perfect. Lone Bison Fly Tables was created. I quickly assembled a couple buddies (with many years of fly tying experience) over a few beers and bar snacks at a local pub, presented my table and other accessories and said "what do you think!" Over the next couple hours and a shared plate of mozzarella bites the Heirloom and the Artisan were on their way to stardom. From there the Heirloom and Artisan tables were discontinued and the HERITAGE and NOMAD models have taken their place!
My business partners self proclaimed duties:
When not building fly tying stations this is my favorite activity. Pack a small bag, grab a fly rod and fly boxes, ensure I have an extra paddle, load up Clara, and off to explore. The Kings River in Northwest Arkansas has been my favorite for years. Few trophies, but the solitude is wonderful.
A planer allows me to rescue crappy wood!
